The software is designed to distinguish unique AI-generated patterns and recognize the coherence of the writing, making it easier for educators to identify potential instances of plagiarism involving generative AI tools. While the tool may not be perfect, it is an important step in ensuring academic integrity and helping students develop their own writing skills.

The new feature is available within the Originality Report in the Feedback Studio for submissions created after its launch on Tuesday the 4th of April 2023. Once a submission has been text-matched against other sources, a blue AI Writing Detection indicator will appear in the side panel with a percentage representing the percentage of the submission that Turnitin’s model predicts was generated by an AI writing tool. In addition, a AI Report will be displayed which highlights the exact segments of the assignment that seem to be AI-generated. The AI Writing Detection indicator and AI Report should be considered indicators of possible misconduct, and it is the responsibility of the reviewer/instructor to make the final determination based on their academic and institutional policies.

It is important to note that the rate of false positives with these types of detectors is not zero, as pointed out in a recent Washington Post article featuring high school student Goetz, who was flagged by Turnitin for using ChatGPT in her essay. These inaccurate findings can have serious consequences for students, including impacting their teacher-student relationships, raising doubts about fair grading practices, and creating skepticism regarding educators’ reliance on these types of detection tools.
