What was life giving?  What was life taking?

Followers of Jesus, by his cross we are redeemed from the futility of sin. Alleluia!
By his rising we are free from the fear of death. Alleluia!
By his love we are made new in the living and enduring Word of God. Alleluia! Thanks be to God!

Hearing and Speaking the Living Word:

John 17:6-19

6”I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; 8for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 10All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them.

11And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. 12While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. 14I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. 16They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.

17Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.

Prayers of the People:
For pastors, teachers, and ministers, that they recognize the risen Christ in Word and Sacrament and lead your church with wisdom, humility, and courage;
God of resurrection, hear our prayer.
For the governments of the world and its leaders, that they may resist the corruption of sin and serve  the common good; God of resurrection, hear our prayer.
For our planet Earth, that all people may be good stewards of its resources  and share in its abundance;
God of resurrection, hear our prayer.
For the poor and the stranger,  that they may receive a place of refuge and hope, and that the church may offer the hospitality the first disciple offered to Jesus on the road
to Emmaus;  God of resurrection, hear our prayer.
For the sick and those in distress, that they may find healing for their pain  and be restored to fullness of life;
God of resurrection, hear our prayer.
For our neighbors,  that we may live together in peace and share in our resources; God of resurrection, hear our prayer.
For our enemies, that they may receive good things, and that we, your servants, not return evil for evil;
God of resurrection, hear our prayer.
Almighty God, receive these prayers we offer, and by the power of your Holy Spirit make us witnesses to the glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ,through whom we pray. Amen.

Prayers of Eucharist

Leader:     The Lord is always with you
All:           And also with you
Leader:     Lift up your hearts
All:           We lift them up to the Lord
Leader:     Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
All:           It is right to give God thanks and praise

Blessed are you, O God, for you have brought forth bread from the earth.
Blessed are you O God, for you have created the fruit of the vine.

In the beginning you watered the earth that human beings might have food and drink
You gave your servant Sarah bread to strengthen her family on their journey, and wine to them glad.

You called Moses and his people out of bondage and refreshed them with food in the wilderness
You gave Mary, Joseph and Jesus their daily bread to share.

You offer us bread and wine to nourish us on our journey as your daughters and sons.
And so with all our sisters and brothers, before and beside us, we praise you from our hearts for your goodness.

Among friends and gathered around the table, Jesus took bread and having blessed it he broke and gave it to his disciples saying:
This is my body, given for you

In the same way he took wine and having blessed it gave the cup to his disciples saying:
This cup is a new relationship with God, sealed with my life. Take this and share it.

So now, following Jesus’ example, we take this bread and wine  – ordinary things of the world through which God will bless us
And as Jesus offered thanks for the gifts of the earth, let us also celebrate God’ goodness.

Lord Jesus, as you were present with the disciples in that upstairs room, you are now present with us. Breathe your Holy Spirit upon us that we might be your very body on the earth.
You are above us, You are beneath us, You are beside us, You are in us.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours.
Now and for ever. Amen
